Buddy and Cheree Wessner are the owners of Wessner’s Excavating, LLC a company that began as a two-person operation over twenty one years ago.
In 1987 Buddy started the company with a 1963 dump truck and a loader. He did residential work for home and septic system construction. Buddy said the business was a natural fit for him because he grew up on a farm and liked “working in the dirt.”
He soon was joined by brothers Tim and Jake and as the business continued to expand more employees were added. The company now employs over thirty people.
Construction has gradually changed from residential to commercial and now represents ninety-five percent of the work. The company does drainage and general site work for commercial and retail businesses. Also significant is work for horse owners, frequently building arenas.
Wessner’s Excavating, LLC performs work within a forty mile radius of the Lowhill Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania office, where the company moved in 2001 after outgrowing their headquarters along PA Route 100.
The company recently added a new landscaping division. They build block retaining walls, supply screened topsoil and prepare seed beds for planting lawns.
There are two full-time estimators on staff who use computerize take-off and estimating software to provide quicker and more accurate quotes. The staff also includes a full-time survey crew.
Wessner’s Excavating, LLC has been upgrading equipment and following trends to position the company for a second twenty years of success. Most site work is performed with GPS outfitted equipment. “It gets rid of human error and makes a job faster and more efficient,” says Buddy.
Buddy says that Cheree continues to be an important part of the business as the company bookkeeper. Buddy says, “We both learned our jobs as we went along.” The couple has three children who are getting involved in the business. Justine, who is studying accounting at Penn State, Kristin and Brandon are high school students at Northwestern Lehigh High School.
